The 31-year-old Astori was found dead in his hotel room last Sunday after a suspected cardiac arrest before his team was to play an Italian league match at Udinese.

Many were brought to tears, including Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon, as a minute's silence was held at the top-flight grounds.

Fiorentina paid a touching tribute to Davide Astori following his tragic passing.

The Viola captain and Italy worldwide died in his sleep last Saturday, which led to an outpouring of grief from the football community.

Fiorentina midfielder Marco Benassi is sure "Davide Astori was on the field with us today and I like to think he helped Vitor Hugo's leap".

The game was halted in the 13th minute - a tribute to Astori's shirt number - as both sets of players let out a deafening round of applause and a tifo of "Davide 13" emblazoned the top tier of Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Fiorentina's lone goal came in the 25th minute from Brazilian central defender Vitor Hugo, on a header at the left post off a cross from Riccardo Saponara.

The entire day was dedicated to Astori's memory, with all the mascots wearing the defender's now-retired No.13 shirt - half in Fiorentina jerseys, half in Cagliari colours...
