One dead after chartered bus carrying high school students flips in Alabama

A charter bus carrying high school students from the Houston area crashed early Tuesday and killed one person, authorities said.

The bus entered the median and then plunged into the ravine at about 5:30 a.m., the sheriff said.

Channelview Independent School District spokesman Mark Kramer confirmed that the charter bus was carrying Channelview High School band members.

Chris Elliott, a Baldwin County commissioner said: "We have multiple injuries; the bus went down into a ravine".

Officials said the bus was one of two Houston-bound charters traveling together and that no other vehicles were involved in the pre-dawn crash. He spoke with both of them after the crash and was on his way to the hospital.

He confirmed that at least one person had died following the accident. "Some were carried out by either deputies or other law enforcement", the sheriff said, explaining the depth of the ravine complicated rescue efforts.

The students were from Channelview High School in the Houston area, local media reported.

At least one helicopter landed at USA Medical Center in Mobile, about 7 a.m.

Mike Burke, a spokesman at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida, said about 20 patients had been brought to the hospital by ambulance and helicopter, "and more are on the way". He could not provide information about the extent of their injuries or conditions.

The Sheriff's Office said injured people were taken to hospitals in Baldwin County as well as Pensacola. He said he did not know how many passengers were injured, but said they were "numerous". The rest of the injured, including a Baldwin County deputy hurt during the extrication process, suffered minor wounds, he said.
