BJP gains in Bihar, leads in Gorakhpur seat of UP

With the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) marking a clear lead in the by-elections for Araria Lok Sabha seat and Jehanbad Assembly seat, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Wednesday said that results reflected that the jailed party chief Lalu Prasad's influence still prevailed in Bihar. BJP candidate Rinki Rani Pandey defeated her nearest rival Congress candidate Shambhu Singh Patel by a margin of over 16,000 votes in Bhabhua assembly seat.

AM: RJD leading now by 455 votes. The BJP candidates have maintained their lead and are ahead in Bhabhua and Araria by 3,253 and 5,500 votes respectively. The party is now leading in both the constituencies.

Elections results will be announced today for Jehanabad, Bhabua and Araria'sBypolls.

The Gorakhpur seat has been a strong hold of the BJP for the past 20 years.

The by-poll in Araria is being viewed as a test for the ruling JD (U)-BJP combine as well as the opposition RJD-Congress alliance, ahead of the big battle in the general elections due next year.

Security across the Gorakhpur and Phulpur constituencies in Uttar Pradesh have been tightened as counting of votes is under way.

JD-U president and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had walked out of NDA after Narendra Modi's prime ministerial candidature was confirmed in the run up to 2014 Lok Sabha polls. After this victory, West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC Supremo-Mamta Banerjee gave a congratulate to RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on Twitter.

According to latest data, RJD's Sarfaraz Alam, who had in the earlier rounds trailed behind BJP's Pradip Kumar Singh, was now leading by about 14,500 votes after ninth rounds of counting of votes.

In Jehanabad, the RJD hopes to retain the Assembly seat that fell vacant after the death of Mundrika Yadav.
