Denver Broncos: Case Keenum was a different player in 2017

Denver Broncos: Case Keenum was a different player in 2017

Using ESPN's advanced Total QBR formula, Keenum ranked at 69.7 a year ago. The move means the Broncos are no longer among the teams searching for a gunslinger in free agency.

Minnesota is the current favorite to sign Cousins, per Schefter.

Although often maligned by the talking heads on TV, Keenum's two seasons as the part-time starter for a really bad St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams team were better than advertised.

Keenum helped power the Vikings to the NFC Championship Game last season as Minnesota went 11-3 in his regular-season starts in place of an injured Sam Bradford.

The departure of Keenum leaves the Vikings in the middle of the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes with the Jets and Cardinals also battling for his services. In the playoffs, he completed a miracle pass to receiver Taye Diggs to push Minnesota past the New Orleans Saints and into the National Football League title game, where they were annihilated by the future Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles 38-7.

The biggest question now for the Broncos is how the team plans to use with the No. 5 pick in the draft now that Keenum is in the fold. The last quarterback to get his first 10-win season at the age of 29 or older and then repeat the same feat the following year?

"I still think that we're not too far away", Elway said earlier in the offseason. However, that wasn't good enough for him to get drafted.

The addition of Keenum moves the Broncos immediately from the absolute bottom of the AFC West to contending for the division.

"There were some things we should have done differently that we didn't do". He has just two playoff starts in his career - both this past January - or two more than Trevor Siemian or Paxton Lynch.

The first domino has fallen in the 2018 free agent quarterback race.

Elway insists the Broncos can get right back into the playoff picture with the right quarterback and tweaks to other areas of the roster.

Coming off of a career year with Minnesota, Keenum accepted the Broncos' offer of a two-year contract as the Vikings made a decision to go in a different direction.

That doesn't appeal to me for a team that constantly preaches it will not rebuild.
