Kirk Cousins: Minnesota Vikings Will Sign Free Agent QB

Kirk Cousins: Minnesota Vikings Will Sign Free Agent QB

Keenum, at 30 years old, is in the prime of his career. That is up for debate.

The Minnesota Vikings are reportedly going to offer Cousins a three-year deal to sign him to be their franchise quarterback.

Cousins, who has played two seasons for the Redskins on a franchise tag, topped the 4,000-yard mark for the third straight year in 2017. He finished with 4,093 passing yards, 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 2017 and he has thrown for at least 4,000 yards and 25 touchdown passes in each of the past three seasons.

Donovan McNabb is the classic example: The quarterback signed a massive five-year, $78 million contract with the Washington Redskins in 2010 - and only saw $8 million of it after being traded to the Vikings and released in December 2011. Now, how healthy he is at the start of the season, TBD.

For now, the message from Rick Spielman and the Vikings' front office is clear.

WELCOME TO MINNESOTA: Vikings Pro Bowl cornerback welcomed Cousins to Minnesota with a tweet, but made sure to let him know it will still be "Rhodes Closed" in practice. Coach Mike Zimmer recently expressed disdain for the concept of "windows of opportunity" in the NFL, but there is no denying that in this league they exist and they are short. Cousins, who is 29, will hit free agency again at age 32.

Another significant piece for both the near- and long-term future of the Broncos will come in April and having a handsomely-paid starting quarterback in the fold grants them flexibility in the upcoming draft. Cousins will be joining an offense that features Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen on the outside, Kevin Rudolph at tight end and a top-10 rushing attack.

Kirk Cousins' first free agent visit will be with the Vikings.

"This position is such a priority and such a premium in this league because you're getting after one of the most important positions".

"We've only agreed to visit Minnesota first", McCartney said. He took over after Sam Bradford suffered a knee injury in the opener and started all but one game the rest of the season.

The fact the Vikings chose to turn to Cousins isn't a big surprise. When the Broncos played at Philly, the two teams looked like two different levels of football.

But by the time the free-agent negotiating window did open, Elway had settled on Keenum.

Minnesota has a sparkling stadium, the site of Super Bowl 52, and the organization just moved into new state-of-the-art suburban headquarters with top-of-the-line practice fields and training facilities just last week.
