Pakistan tragedy: 7 killed in blast near Nawaz Sharif's; police targetted

The injured were shifted to the Tehsil Headquarters Hospital, Raiwind, where some of them were listed in a critical condition, triggering fears that the death toll might go up.

Police said the blast took place after evening prayers and most members of the religious group had exited into the street, some making purchases nearby. A suicide bomber targeted police camp at Raiwind city, 30 km away from Lahore.

According to media reports, the blast occurred near a police vehicle at a check post. Around 25 people were also injured in the attack.

A suicide attack near a software technology park in Lahore killed 26 people and wounded over 50 in July past year.

The checkpoint is located near a religious group's main congregation place in Raiwind near Lahore, the capital of Punjab province.

Punjab's chief minister Shahbaz Sharif said: "The martyred policemen are our heroes".

It was such a powerful blast that its sound was heard several kilometers from the site.

The police personnel were changing the duty at the time of the blast, the witness said.

The attack has come when Lahore is days away from hosting two play-off matches of Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2018, cricket-loving nation s indeginous cricket league that is presently underway in Dubai and Sharjah.

Pakistan Rangers quick response force has reached the spot and cordoned off the area along with the police.

A spokesman for Jamaat-ur-Ahrar, a faction of the Tehrik-i-Taliban had telephoned Reuters and claimed responsibility for the February 14 attack.

This is the first incident of such nature in Lahore this year, however, nearly 60 people lost their lives in terrorist attacks in 2017.
