Spoon & Stable's Diane Yang is an Outstanding Pastry Chef finalist, while Steven Brown at Tilia (also a 2017 finalist), Spoon & Stable's Gavin Kaysen, and Ann Kim over at Young Joni are still in the running for Best Chef: Midwest.

Former Madison Chef Justin Carlisle, who owns the intimate restaurant Ardent on Milwaukee's East Side, has made it into the final round of the James Beard Awards again this year for the third time in a row.

Wolf has been named a semifinalist for the award 11 times.

Considered to be the Oscars of the culinary award, the awards recognize chefs, front of house professionals, restaurateurs, and media in a broad array of categories. The organization announced its pool of five finalists this morning via a live press conference in Philadelphia.

Outstanding Service: San Francisco's iconic Zuni Cafe will go up against the city's Saison and three other US restaurants for the award that honors a business that "demonstrates high standards of hospitality and service".

Outstanding Chef: Kinch and Kostow will go up against Donald Link of Herbsaint in New Orleans, Gabrielle Hamilton of Prune in New York City and Ashley Christensen of Poole's Diner in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Kostow, of The Restaurant at Meadowwood, and chef-owner David Kinch, of Manresa in Los Gatos, both got the nod for Outstanding Chef. Vedge marked six years in business last Fall. While over 20 DC-area names were recognized in almost every category in this year's first round, only a handful remain contenders.

Media winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in New York City on April 27, and the restaurant winners will be announced in Chicago on May 7.
