An Unwanted Kiss on 'American Idol'

An Unwanted Kiss on 'American Idol'

During a round of auditions that aired earlier this week locally on Fox8, which airs the show the same day as the U.S., the three judges were introduced to 19-year-old Benjamin Glaze, an Oklahoma native who sang an original tune with hopes of getting the ever-coveted golden ticket. "I was a tad bit uncomfortable", he said, explaining that he had serious intentions for the romantic gesture.

Not only was Glaze's first kiss a let-down for him, but Perry wasn't impressed with his singing either as the judges chose not to let Glaze advance to the next stage. Even fellow judge Luke Bryan called Holmes a "dreamboat". After he forgot to make a smooching sound, Katy asked Benjamin for a second during which she turned her head at the last moment so that they kissed on the lips.

Ms. Perry motioned for him to come over to the judges' table and stuck her face toward him. "I wanted my first kiss to be special". The young cashier told the judges that he had never been in a relationship before and never had a kiss.

In the segments that featured Mr. Glaze, he was shown waiting around in anticipation for his audition with other hopefuls. "Katy!" he yelled. "You didn't!"

The incident took place in October but didn't air until Sunday's premiere. "I know a lot of guys would be like, 'Heck yeah!' But for me, I was raised in a conservative family and I was uncomfortable immediately".

Benjamin Glaze, 19, told the A List panel that he'd never kissed a girl before, prompting Katy, 33, to ask for a peck on the cheek.

When he returned home, Mr. Glaze worked through his feelings about the kiss by talking to his friends.

The kiss did result in his getting more screen time, which has helped draw attention to his music.

The first kiss of an aw-shucks teenager from Oklahoma, delivered by a superstar singer, might have made for a sweet pop-culture moment in a previous era.

Months later - and in the wake of movements like #MeToo - Glaze says he doesn't feel he was sexually harassed by Perry, and has rationalized the kiss by determining it didn't actually count.
